29.5 million adults with a mental illness went without mental health treatment in 2024. Among those individuals, more than 6 million people recognized they needed help but still did not receive care.

Nearly half of U.S. adults with a mental illness did not receive treatment in 2024. Only 52.1% of adults living with a mental illness received mental health treatment, leaving millions without the support they needed.

Cost remains one of the biggest barriers to care. Among adults who knew they needed mental health treatment but did not receive it, 65.2% reported that treatment was simply too expensive.
